Garden Sale!

My MIL informed me a couple days ago that the local greenhouse's 'Box Sale' was today. I offered to drive and we arrived just a few minutes after the opening at 8am this morning. Did we get some great deals!!

Each box of plants is $10 - no stacking, but little six/four packs could half hang over the edge. All of my box plants were perennials in 4" pots. Both my MIL and I purchased two boxes. In case you are wondering what's in my boxes, I found peonies, columbine, daylilies, coral bells, siberian iris, japanese iris, and hosta.

Roses were $5 & Clematis were $4. I found one beautiful rose bush - it's has a red flower, and I picked out two clematis - a white and a dark purple/blue. Neither of us purchased any baskets, but they were also marked down to $5! This is an incredible deal for someone like me who loves perennials, has not a wisp of perennials gardens in her yard (yet!), and is having landscape work done in about 3 weeks.

I want to plant so badly, but know I need to wait till the landscape work is done. Besides, we'll have to cultivate and spray to kill all the weeds that now look like lawn from a distance before the real grass can be sown. So, I'll keep these plants alive on my porch for now and dream about the possibilities. Patience ... I'm working on the virtue of patience.

  1. all your little plants are so pretty. gardening (in the dirt anyway) has taken a backseat during these HOT.HOT days. most of the plants i brought to transplant from the little house have died. either because i didn't get them into the ground in time or because the water system in the front yard is quirky. it sounds like you'll have good weather for a while. perfect for planting. how long does your summer in minnesota last, suzie? does it stay hot forever like it does here? we've had Christmases where we are wearing flip flops (not to mass of course)

  2. I'm actually on the ND side of the Red River, but the climate is about the same. Our first frost can come as early as August or as late as October. Most of the time it falls in September. For the first few, we can cover the garden with sheets or blankets to gain extra growing time. The days will be 70's, but the evening will often be much cooler. Right now, it's been in the 70's .. I prefer this type of weather. INto the 80's and higher feels too warm; I don't mind layering if it's chilly. Guess I'm perfectly suited for our climate!
