SFG – lessons learned & tips to try

1.  This fall, I’ll try to remember to cover the mix/box over winter.  We are unprotected and the wind carried off quite a bit of the soil-less mix.  If I had covered each box with newspaper and weighted it down with rocks (we have plenty!), I’d have protected my beds.  However, since I should be amending the beds with a bit of compost each year, maybe it’s not such a big deal to let the wind create a bit of room.

2.  To repel the nibbling deer, I’ll try hanging citrus scented soap in nylon or net bags around the perimeter of the garden.  If that doesn’t work, I will fence … in an attractive way.

Part I of many …

Because … I’m sure there will be more lessons and tips throughout the year!

  1. My step father used to hang bloodmeal (don't ask me) in old pantyhose to keep the deer away. Maybe a local gardening shop would know what that is?? I was a city kid living on a ranch, so I didn't pay too much attention, lol, just enough.

  2. Laura - SFG means Square Foot Garden. It's a type of soil-less gardening done in raised beds/boxes that are divided in to 'square foot' sections for planting. Just get tired of typing out the whole name!

Amy Caroline - I have used bloodmeal in the past ... sprinkled on the ground to deter rabbits. I might even still have some on hand & will have to remember the pantyhose method for deer if needed.

  3. I'll have to try the citrus thing. I'm thinking of next year to plant a row for the bunnies (of spinach) and fence in the rest! ;-) I have one very persistent little bunny, but I feel sorry for it, because it looks thin. Probably way to soft-hearted at me....oh, and lazy, too, because my chicken wire I "saved" is all tangled up in a big Christmas-tree-lightblubs-like-snarl. ugh.
