Holiday Goodies

For the last couple weeks, holiday prep has been entering my thoughts.  I like to get a jump start and freeze a variety of treats in October/November.  It really makes Advent seem less rushed and most of my favorites hold up very well in the freezer.  Besides, I'm usually baking at least 6 dozen holiday treats for my college fraternity's Fall/Winter fundraiser held the first full weekend in November.  Why stop at 6 dozen??

This year, the addition of a new little one has me thinking farther ahead, and our local country church has their fundraiser next weekend (I'm assigned to bring a pan of bars).  I'd make them this week and freeze the bars, but they don't want them cut!  I'm sure that makes sense because then they will all be the same size ... but, for someone trying to check off items on the To-Do List, it's not very convenient.  The bars will need to wait.

These are the goodies I'd like to make this year, in prioritized order ... priority really meaning favorites first!  I've made most of these every year, except for Pizzelles.  Last year was the first year, and I invested in a pizzelle griddle because they were on sale.  Grandma Golden Acres and I had a fun time experimenting, but they are so easy we decided to make it an annual addition to our treat list.
I like to try something new each year.  In looking through my stack of holiday and cookie magazines, I came across a recipe for Chocolate Caramel Thumbprints (pictured below).  So, if there is time, I'd like to make that my experimental recipe for this season.  If the kitchen experiment actually happens, you can be sure I'll post pictures!

  1. I LOVE your list of Christmas goodies, Suzie. You'll have to point me in the direction of your Divinity recipe sometime--I've had problems with mine.

  2. I'll make sure to post the Divinity recipe (& email it to you). I've been making it in the microwave for years and the recipe is so much quicker and easier than the old-fashioned stove top method.

  3. If I make'em I eat'em. ugh.

    Happy Baking!

  4. They all sound great! And that's so wise of you to bake ahead ... I try to shop ahead, so Advent isn't as rushed, but baking ahead is a good idea, too. Last year, I participated in a cookie exchange. It was fun!

  5. geesh suzie. all those goodies sound so extremely yummy. i've always wanted to delve a little deeper into candy making and such, but i don't have a lot of patience when things require thermometers and special equipment.
i do remember when my grandma used to make these peanut butter bon bons covered in chocolate and they were the bees knees. i'll have to try some of those this year.
maybe you could email me the divinity recipe too. i'd like to try that as well.
i never thought of baking ahead though. that is a good idea. but we don't have a lot of freezer space and my boys would probably find all the goodies and clean me out anyway!

well, happy baking! i bet your house is nice and warm with the oven on so much!

  6. The cashew brittle is a bit time consuming, but the flavor makes me forget! It is so buttery yummy that I can't imagine a year without at least one batch.

The Divinity in the microwave takes away - once you get your microwave times figured out - the thermometer in the pan. This recipe always works for me ... I just forget to put in almond or vanilla flavoring sometimes!

I must be a really scary momma because my kids haven't ever dug into the Christmas goodies. Other goodies, yes, but not the Christmas goodies!
