This blog is a record of our daily life ... the joys and struggles of raising our little flock to love life and the author of life, our Lord. There are many similarities between Christ's followers and a flock of sheep, thus the name of this blog. I'm trying to 'shepherd' my little flock to know and love Christ - this is my vocation.
Yesterday, I planted my Herb Mary Garden. Grandma Green Acres brought me these herbs last week: Rosemary, Thyme, Parsley, and Sage. It was a very good feeling to get my hands dirty and put some plants in the soil!
It's beautiful!! I grew basil last year in a pot, it took forever to grow! When you use it, which one recipe used all of it, does it re-grow? I just got rid of it after that!
Your herb garden looks so beautiful, Suzie! Will you keep it it that container, or will you have to transplant eventually. (I'm a bit clueless when it comes to gardening, but I so want to learn, as I do with sewing and quilting and all those domestic things =)
Sarah, I'll probably keep the herbs in the planter for this year. The Parsley is biennial, so if I keep it covered over winter it might come back next year. I've had some sage plants come back the next year, too.
Thyme and Rosemary need to be replanted each year as they don't over winter in ND, at least in my experience.
Some of the herbs can be invasive - the four I planted aren't. However, watch out for oregano & the mints. They smell lovely & flower beautifully, but will crowd out other herbs if you aren't 'vigilant' with a hoe. Dill is great, too. It self seeds year after year, but is easy to thin out.
Jamie, Basil doesn't come back if you use the whole plant. If you just picked a portion of the leaves, it will send out more leaves from that node, though. My MIL and SIL like to grow basil for pesto. I've yet to grow into liking pesto.
suzie, i love your little herb garden. my parsley is not doing so well, i've read that it likes sandy soil and perhaps that is why. my mint is doing lovely, though...maybe my herb garden needs a mary statue!
